Heidrun Friese, TU Chemnitz: Limits of Hospitality
„Nowadays we are all on the move“ as Zygmunt Bauman states. Yet mobility is stratified, uneven, and reflects the injustices of the current postcolonial situation. Recent debates about mobile people from North African countries and the Middle East, who arrive in Europe as ‘migrants’ or 'refugees’ demonstrate the stratified nature of mobility. Moreover, the governance of mobility and the tragic border regime reveal the fundamental paradoxes undergirding democracy (Chantal Mouffe). This lecture traces the paradoxes of democracy inscribed into the limits of hospitality in the case of Lampedusa and seeks to demonstrate how images of mobile people articulate contemporary border regimes.
