Beschreibung
Multiferroic materials with their coexisting orders of electric and magnetic dipoles may find many technological applications, such as magnetoelectric memory. Recent progress led to discovery of a large number of new multiferroics showing spectacular effects, i.e. the magnetically-induced rotation of the electric polarization, large increase of dielectric constant in an applied magnetic field and the excitation of spin waves by the electric field of light. In my talk I will give a general introduction into multiferroic materials and microscopic mechanisms for magnetoelectric coupling. I will discuss ferroelectric properties of complex magnetics states found in frustrated magnets and the elctric polarization induced by topological magnetic defects, such as domain walls, vortices and skyrmions, which can be used for the electric detection and manipulation of these spin textures.
