Abstract:
Switzerland and Swiss officials have long said that the country had no link to slavery. This history is now changing. Here I show how Swiss banker David de Pury and his company were involved in the trade of enslaved people in Brazil. Using archives from Portugal and Switzerland, I show how the Triangular trade made de Pury one of the richest persons of his time. De Pury is part of a network of Swiss Huguenots who were active in banking and cloth trade.
Referent: Ass. Prof. Alain Naef, PhD (ESSEC Business School, Paris)
