The General Conference of UNESCO in 1972 adopted a Convention concerning Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The main criterion for a site to qualify is its unique interest worldwide or, in the so-called Outstanding Universal Value. India ratified this Convention in November 1977. This paper discusses several issues relating to the selection and management of World Heritage sites of which India has thirty-two: twenty-five are categorized as cultural and seven natural. Of interest to this paper are the Great Living Chola temples in Tamilnadu inscribed in 1987 and extended in 2004. These include the 11th and 12th century Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur; Temple of Gangaikondacholisvaram; and Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram. The Archaeological Survey of India’s website states that “the temple with its massive proportions and simplicity of design provided inspiration for future designs in constructions not only in south India but also in south-east Asia.

This paper revisits the Tamil coast and investigates its maritime networks across the Bay of Bengal with reference to the seaside town of Nagapattinam. The present district of Nagapattinam, which came into being in 1991, is known to have been settled as early as the prehistoric Neolithic period and provides evidence for continued activity well into the present. It was not only an important port and trading settlement, but was also a major sacred centre, as evident from the 16th century dargah, which continues to be a focus of pilgrimage, as also the 17th century basilica of Our Lady of Good Health at Velankanni, 10 kilometres from Nagapattinam.
