Beschreibung

This study investigates the real exchange rate movements and their causes in early modern Europe. We find that real exchange rates appreciated in Western Europe and decreased in Eastern Europe, due to both monetary and real causes. On the monetary front, the silver arriving from the New World increased prices in Spain and its close neighbors more than it increased them in more distant regions, leading to a real exchange rate appreciation in the former. We also find that the impact of the silver shock tended to be larger for the prices of nontradables goods than tradables, as predicted by theory. On the real front, the economic growth in England and Dutch Republic was found to be associated with real exchange rate appreciation, as consistent with the Balassa Samuelson effect.
