Beschreibung

Im Rahmen des Research Seminar „Economic History, Growth & Development“ hält PD Dr. Tobias Jopp von der Universität Regensburgeinen Vortrag mit dem Titel: "On the Short-Term Economic Costs of the Spanish Influenza in Germany: A Quantification Attempt for the Year 1918".

Abstract: The paper takes a microeconomic approach to the short-term economic costs of the Spanish flu. The source is the administrative reports of the Allgemeiner Knappschaftsverein zu Bochum, which insured all miners employed in the Ruhr area on the right bank of the Rhine against illness (and other life risks such as invalidity) and, with around 450,000 active members (1913/14), it was one of the largest health insurance funds under Reich law. Three cost perspectives are explored starting from the Allgemeiner KV with a view to 1918: 1. the short-term costs to the Ruhr mining industry itself in terms of the value of lost production, 2. the excess costs to the health insurance system, and 3. the reduction in gross domestic product calculated from the distribution side. The loss in GDP estimated from these micro data is arguably substantial and, technically, reflects a globalization-free estimate of the short-term impact of the Spanish Flu on an otherwise already shaken economy.
