On January 4, 2010, a gigantic mass of rocks came down a steep mountain slope in Hunza, Northern Pakistan. The landslide filled the narrow valley of the Hunza River, blocked the water and buried the Karakorum Highway. In the subsequent months a lake of up to 30 km length developed behind the bock of debris. For more than two years now Upper Hunza is accessible from Pakistan only via the lake by a provisional boat service. This has severe consequences for the economic situation of the area as well as for health services and education of the local people. The presentation will give an outline of the consequences of the landslide. The focus will be particularly on political mobilization against what is perceived locally as insufficient government efforts to handle the situation.
