Beschreibung
Vortragender: Abdourahmane Idris (Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg, South Africa):
The paper is an overview of the relationships between more traditional forms of Islam and Orthodox reformism in several West African countries. These relationships are examined in light of the emergence of an ideology of Shari’a in the region – but chiefly in Northern Nigeria and secondarily in Northern Mali. The general context of this evolution is analyzed using the categories of persuasion and violence, while the West African sub-region is viewed as the frame of reference for understanding both its origins and its prospects. The central questions of the paper can be summarized thusly: in which direction would the balance of persuasion and violence, or politics and warfare, tend to tip? What are the key factors driving evolution? And the central methodological assumption is that any attempt to respond to such a question would profit greatly by using the regional comparative approach on which the paper is built.
