Title: The Cross and the Sword. Religious Identity, Land Ownership, and Conflict: Evidence from Six Centuries of English History

Abstract:
Does the secular or religious identity of rulers affect the chances that a conflict emerges on their land? We answer this question using fine-grained local, geo-coded data on conflicts and land ownership during eight centuries of English history. We causally identify the effect of identity on conflict using a difference-in-differences strategy, where we compare holdings that remained in secular hands with those that switched to Benedictine tenant-in-chiefs after the Norman Conquest (1066). We show that the two groups are not different before the Conquest, in terms of probability of experiencing a conflict. After the conquest, and before the dissolution (1536), holdings controlled by Monasteries experience a significantly higher probability of conflict. The difference disappears again after the Dissolution. We show that the effect is driven by high-value holdings and it is particularly strong in the period including the “Peasant’s revolt” (1381).
