All over Latin America, geneticists are exploring the genetic profiles of mestizo (mixed) populations, and defining them in terms of African, Amerindian and European "genetic ancestries". Their aims are mainly related to medical agendas, but in the process they produce representations of the nation and its composition in ethnic, or one might say "racial," terms (although the geneticists now reject that term). Some geneticists also make explicit statements about the nation and about social policies related to diversity. Overall, there is a strong tendency to represent the nation as essentially a mestizo entity, which, I argue, is notable in the light of some 20 years of multiculturalist policy-making in the region. The paper explores the implications of this genetic research for conceptualisations of the nation, "racial"-ethnic diversity and inclusion/exclusion, all of which impact on citizenship. The paper presents results and reflections from the project "Race, genomics and mestizaje (mixture) in Latin America: a comparative approach", which focuses on Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.
