This paper aims at a description of the way violence is capable of restructuring kinship. In this paper, I take kinship to indicate the ways in which categories of persons are defined and relations between them regulated. If blood is one of the ways through which relations between persons are imagined, resistance to state violence seems to become another way through which the closeness and mutuality implied by kinship is now imagined. Based on 6-months’ fieldwork in Mersin, a large city in the south of Turkey, I will try to argue that this resistance takes at two very different registers. On the one hand, rather than blood mutual suffering at the hands of the state becomes the “shared substance” through which kinship is defined. This definition retains major positions such as the mother/child bond, but shifts its content. At another, more discursive level, kinship comes to be opposed to the kinlessness of the state that oppresses. In the cultural politics of the Turkish nationalism developed in response to Kurdish guerilla warfare, Kurds have too much kinship in the form of tribal structure and are thus less than modern. In response, Kurds claim this kinship as a form of superior morality that lacks among the Turks. The paper will trace the everyday circumstances where such discursive and practical issues regarding kinship are negotiated in the context of the daily encounter between Kurds and Turks that the city makes possible.
