Beschreibung
For hundreds of years, monks and nuns cared for the sick and poor, orphans and travellers, the written word and the memory of the dead. The English Reformation then brought dramatic change. Within five years only, more than 850 monasteries were dissolved and plundered by order of King Henry VIII, who had appointed himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England. For the people, the disappearance of the monasteries meant religious disorientation and an immense loss of culture.
Referent: Dr. Tanja Müller-Jonak (Leipzig)
